VCs dole out more money for solar power

05Jan06

VCs have started investing more money in solar power. This was not a shocking revelation to me.
Solar systems typically cost around $25K for a residential system. State and federal subsidies and tax breaks, especially in energy starved areas like California are large enough to make a meaningful dent in the initial cost of the system. Its only a matter of time before states on the East Coast and (someday, maybe) in the Midwest will follow suit and offer government subsidies in the form of mortgage rebates for sustainable houses.

I wonder what energy companies will do when consumers start to demand netzero metering– and everyone has a surplus of energy in the summer but rely on the energy company to heat their house in the winter. Someone ought to design an ultra large capacity battery and charge it up over the summer.. This is probably impossible, but worth a shot?

I’m currently working on a solar power calculator for the typical consumer that takes into account several factors and attempts to conclude if solar power is more cost effective than traditional energy from the power company.

Watch this blog in the near future for the full economic analysis.
