Dream job #1

29Apr06

I think its our generation. Maybe its the way we were brainwashed in school; I can still hear my 3rd grade geography teacher trumpeting “Every day is Earth Day” and handing out stickers… Unrestricted, unconditional idealism exuding from our elementary school teachers, finding its way to our actions and thoughts. It seems that some people grow out of it, either for the pursuit of monetary gain or some other self interest.

But by and large, I feel that most people my age still have “it”. Maybe we just haven’t grown up yet. What is it about our generation that insists on doing “great” things and having an impact on society? A paycheck (even a substantially large one) isn’t enough for us.

Anyway, in the same spirit, I’ve decided that if I want to be happy (“Work is love made visible.” –Kahlil Gibran) with my career someday, I should start looking for “dream jobs” now . In the next 5-10 years, it makes sense for me to develop skills and capabilities so that my trajectory will land me straight into a job I love. Let’s see how this works out…

Here’s the first one I found (for me):

Vice President for Program and Impact, The Skoll Foundation

Position Description
The Skoll Foundation Vice President for Program and Impact (P&I) is responsible for leading the foundation’s strategic program development, execution, and evaluation with primary emphasis on grant making investments and services. A key programmatic aspiration is to become the social entrepreneurs’ partner of choice. Skoll’s “Invest” strategy is led and advanced by the Vice President for P&I, who works closely with the Vice President for Marketing and Communications to unleash strategic “Connect and Celebrate” synergies and with the Chief Operating Officer to coordinate program related investments. This is a hands-on role, requiring the ability to integrate leadership, management, and producer responsibilities, and to work on multiple projects and programs at the same time. The Vice President for Program and Impact reports to the President and CEO and is a member of the foundation’s senior management team.

Highly entrepreneurial, Skoll values individuals who have the confidence, curiosity and competence to help build and sustain this visionary young foundation’s programs and ensure its impact: high-leverage grant making and program activities integrated with practices that relay our values and ensure efficient, effective operations. We believe that the Skoll organization itself must epitomize our values and vision of a peaceful, prosperous and vibrant world community.

Stay tuned for more dream jobs.
