Kiva and BOP lending

17Jun06

I am elated and secretly jealous at the same time; A friend of mine has deferred B-school at Columbia to pursue a worthy cause– He is working with IndiCorps in Gujurat and working for Kiva to distribute loans amongst the BOP population there. What a cool way to work for a nonprofit startup while working for the greater good. I will have to live vicariously through his experiences and look forward to seeing him blog about his journey (wink, nudge, Sheel :)
On a related note, Kiva rocks now. I saw this service when it first came out, and always thought it was a brilliant idea.. but when I browsed the projects on there last November, there were a dearth of interesting projects that I thought were truly sustainable. Now, that has all changed. The interface is better and always improving, and there are a multitude of projects spanning the developing world.

A new feature that I think is awesome— the gift card! It raises awareness about microentrepreneurship, the developing world, but obviously Kiva itself. Kinda like this charity gift certificate.. But I bet Kiva’s will become more popular because the process just seems easier for the end user.

If you are reading this and haven’t checked out Kiva yet, make a difference in someone’s life thousands of miles from you. Its a better use of your money than buying beer at your local pub. Trust me, it is.

Congratulations Sheel– And thanks to you and to Kiva for fighting the good fight.
