Warren Buffet To Donate $37 Billion To Gates Foundation

26Jun06

Good news, fellow world citizens. Turns out we have hope after all. The first richest man in the world and the second richest man in the world are both whole-heartedly dedicated to making the world a better place. Gates announced he’s leaving Msoft to work on the world’s problems, and Buffet just donated 80% of his fortune to the Gates foundation. Its the biggest-ever single act of charitable giving in United States. Amazing. I feel extremely fortunate to be living in a time when the resources are mobilized to have a profound positive effect on mankind. Its a great time to be a social entrepreneur.

It is my hope that these two seminal events will go down in history as the beginning of a new era of corporate social awareness and responsibility. Strategic planners, I hope, are taking into consideration the ramifications of their decisions on employees (not just the ones stateside), consumers, shareholders, AND externalities they previously never considered.. (the environment, global health issues, etc).

By the way… on a personal note, if the most celebrated software CEO of all time, and the most celebrated investor ever have understood at such a late stage what is *really* important in their lives, how blessed am I to have found out in my 20s?? I feel so lucky today. Maybe its just the mocha-cappuccino caffeine high, but I doubt it… :)
