Andy Lock, Herman Miller Corporation [NetImpact conference]

02Nov06

The closing keynote for the Net Impact conference was given by Andy Lock.
It was fantastic- Andy is a guy who truly "gets it" when it comes to CSR and values-based leadership.   Here’s what he had to say:

*   Meaning MATTERS.

*   In the coming war for talent, people have tremendous choice over where they’ll work.   People want to make meaning– Companies that align themselves with a mission or purpose that is fulfilling will attract more talent than others.

*   Ok, so the last point was obvious, I observed that this was part of the social milieu in just my peer group… But what I didn’t know is that it’s NOT just about attracting millennials..  Its also about retaining boomers.  Interesting– As people age, they want to feel that they are adding social value, not just working for the almighty dollar (After all, they’re wealthy now, and don’t really need to work anymore)

*   When Andy went to Bangalore and saw what the Hope Foundation was doing, he thought to himself that people there were doing far more enriching stuff than he was.

*  During the tsunami, Herman Miller started a program for employees to go to India to volunteer their time.   For 10 spots, 150 applications came in.

*  The trip was transformational.  Andy says he left a large part of his heart in India.  After the party on the last day of the mission, no one wanted to leave.

*  Its not only employees that have vocational choice.  Leaders have choices too.   Companies with strong purposes are more likely to attract talented leaders.
