You know, it’s really funny. When you’re walking down the streets of Shanghai– or at least the newer ones lined with shops, you’re always accosted by vendors saying “Looka looka… Please have a looka looka”. And they’re constantly trying to sell you stuff. All kinds of stuff. You name it, they’re trying to sell it.
In painful contrast to Guy’s experience , I received this card from a woman on the street. She thrust it into my hand and proceeded to say “watch, shoe, bag”.
I looked down at the card and realized that it had 7 icons on it. A watch, a shirt, a fake Louis Vuitton bag, a boss wallet, a handbag, a FIGURE SKATE?!, and a man playing golf.
Great, so if Freddie Couples was dating Michelle Kwan and looking for a gift for her (maybe a timepiece or a fake bag), this store would be perfect. In most other circumstances, no one of any discerning taste would waste their time with this onslaught of useless badmass.
So, I couldn’t agree more with Guy’s post– I agree EVEN more considering the fact that in a country with over 1 billion people, differentiation and developing a niche is oh-so-important. Selling one thing and selling it really well sets you apart from the vendors that try to please everyone.
