Naked Innovation

A few friends of mine (and recent alums) from the Institute of Design have written a book called “Naked Innovation: Uncovering Shared Theory and Practice for Creating Value”– I’m assuming the title is a riff off of Naked Economics, by Charles Wheelan. C’mon guys, you couldn’t have come up with a more “innovative” name? ;) just teasing..

I have a ton of books that are currently on my reading list which I still need to get through, but I figured another one on the pile wouldn’t hurt too much, so I bought it.

Probably the awesomest thing about the book (let’s be honest here), is that my mug is plastered over page 124, with our media cart design, from an ID Foundation charette.

Ha; No, but seriously, it looks like a great book- especially for NON-IDers. Check it out. Here’s the ToC for your viewing pleasure:

1. Innovation Equation: what organizations do
2. Balanced Breakthroughs: what the market rewards
3. Innovation Intent 1.0
4. People (User-Centered Design)
5. Technology (Product Architecture & Platform Design)
6. Business (Strategic Design)
7. Understanding Innovation: The Ten Types
8. Innovation Intent 2.0
9. Using Frameworks
10. Concept Generation
11. Prototypes
12. Decision Making & Evaluation
13. Implementing Innovation

Right now, there is no link to purchase the book (before you ask), but I will make sure I post when its available for good.

I’ve gone through the book, and it is a great introduction to get people’s “feet wet” with user centered design, but by no means is it a comprehensive look at frameworks or methods that the Institute of Design indoctrinates in its graduates. That’s quite alright, because it doesn’t intend to be; I recommend picking it up if you are interested to find out more about what we do at ID.
