I promise I won’t keep doing this… Throwing down AAPL/the iPod/iPhone/MBAir/etc as an innovation case study. Actually I’m not even using it as a case study this time.
I’m only responding to this comment over on the FastCompany blog, that suggests that Apple should start doing some B2B work by leveraging its credibility that it built up in order to start serving the enterprise, like Kodak did with digital imaging and printing.
That’s interesting. I wonder what would happen with the Mac vs PC ad campaign if the high-design media darling of the personal computer industry started serving up blades or newfangled beowulf clusters or something. yuck.
So let’s see. If this scenario were to really happen, WW[S]JD? Well, let me tell you what I’d do. Before putting the 800 lb gorillas, Dell and IBM in my crosshairs, I’d attack RIM and the Blackberry with rapid haste. While the CIO who reads analyst reports might still be wary to support the iPhone, take a look at what business users who have the choice are using.
A developer kit with a robust API, a full featured browser and more web applications supporting the smaller screen sure do smell like a blackberry killer to me. Improved enterprise security, exchange server support, and future 3G support are also delightful add-ons that I’d start investing in now. Even if I didn’t use it in the future, I’d invest in it (or open source it if in-house development costs were too high). After RIM, maybe I’d be ready to take down the “big guys”.
What do you think, Charlie Brown?
