I don't think that people actually ever 'become' a professional anymore. I guess with the exception of professions that require a credential, like physician or lawyer or real estate broker, your awareness and accrued abilities establish a credential.

That said, there are varying degrees of proficiency and skill.
You and I are both designers, but our abilities to create stuff like a prototype to show someone what a business model might look like... or what the future of _____ could be are far superior, to, say, our rendering abilities with Maxwell.

Don't know of you saw my comment in the Idiom, so I'm going to double down...

That’s some deep sh*t, Ash. Maybe that’s what I mean when I tell someone I work in Design? Create and communicate… are those the core skills of the designer? Create: synthesize something new from existing but inchoate components (e.g. objects, businesses, meaning, etc.). Communicate: explain something to others in a way they can understand rationally and resonate with emotionally (words, images, interactions, etc.). Obviously we like to think that our discipline is way more complex than that, but those two skills might just be the essence of a designer.

So, am *I* a designer? According to the above formula, maybe.

P.S. Paola Antonelli is awesome. Definitely one of the sharpest, most articulate design pundits out there.
