SND29: The 2007 World’s Best-Designed Newspapers from Society for News Design on Vimeo.
The best designed newspapers of 2007, according to the Society of News Design, in case you were interested.
- Akzia from Moscow, Russia: Courageous; unconventional typography, spirit of fearlessness
- Expresso from Paco de Arcos, Portugal: Surprising; Large, visually striking photographs
- Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung from Frankfurt, Germany: Intelligent; Pages are confident, and funny. Illustrations were enlarged rather than hidden and shrunk.
- The Guardian from London, UK: Consistent; Strong headlines, striking photography.
I learned from this award classification. It turns out there is a strong correlation between the design of brands/products/services/experiences and newspapers– The characteristics they use to judge newspaper design could just as easily be universal design principles.
- Consistency. As the best communication designers know, consistency is of the utmost importance in creating a cohesive brand identity.
- Intelligence. With shelves and shelves of commodity goods being peddled, the ones that are “smart” and can be what you need them to be when you want them to is superb (Google Docs or the iPhone)
- Surprise. This is what Brandon Schauer of Adaptive Path calls the Long Wow
- Courage. This one applies to everything mentioned. Having the courage to take the risks in order to resonate with people (instead of imitating the market leader) through branding or the offering itself is vital.
